I posted this “Facebook Live” while I was in the Dominican Republic with Vox journalist Johnny Harris. I was his “fixer” and translator and had been working with his staff for over a month on the logistics of his trip. I provided contacts, handled transportation, etc…
He was working on a mini-documentary series called “Borders” where he visited 6 different border hot-spots in the world, one of them is about the tension on the Haitian-Dominican border. Although I had been to the Dominican Republic many times before, this was my first time spending so much time in the border areas. There, the different ways people of different skin tones are treated is very obvious. A young woman with children got kicked off of a bus we were traveling in because she was dark skinned and suspected of being Haitian. My (American) passport was also checked several times while other lighter-skinned people were left alone.
The whole experience was very depressing, and I decided to publish this video in my hotel room, on the third night of our trip.
You can watch Johnny Harris’ finished video here, where much of this is explained, and I even get to make a brief cameo.
